Uwaga! Mowy zależnej używamy do przytaczania czyichś wypowiedzi, nie cytując ich dosłownie. W tym celu używamy różnych czasowników opisujących czynność mówienia (reporting verbs), takich jak say/tell (mówić) lub ask (pytać/prosić).

W mowie zależnej zmianie ulegają:

• czasy gramatyczne - stosujemy zasadę następstwa czasów;
• zaimki osobowe/dzierżawcze i przymiotniki dzierżawcze - są skutkiem zmiany punktu widzenia;
• okoliczniki czasu i miejsca:
  
  • here → there,
  • now → then,
  • tomorrow → the next/following day,
  • next week / month / year → the next/following week / month / year,
  • tonight / today / this evening → that night / day / evening,
    
  • yesterday → the day before,
  • this → that,
  • these → those.
• szyk zdania - pytania w mowie zależnej przyjmują szyk zdania twierdzącego (podmiot + czasownik),
• zdania rozkazujące w mowie zależnej relacjonujemy za pomocą konstrukcji czasownikowych, np.:
  • tell somebody (not) to do something (kazać komuś coś zrobić / czegoś nie robić),
  • order somebody (not) to do something (kazać komuś coś zrobić / czegoś nie robić),
  • advise somebody (not) to do something (poradzić komuś, żeby coś zrobił / czegoś nie robił).

Zmianie nie ulega czas Past Perfect i czasowniki modalne would, could, should i might.
