Examples of the Past Simple (Przykłady czasu Past Simple):

"It was a sunny afternoon in July ..."

'... the sky went dark, the sea got rough and the waves crushed against ..."

"... Rick shouted out ..."

The Past Simple is formed by using the base form of regular verbs + -ed, and the second form for irregular verbs.

(Czas Past Simple tworzymy, dodając do podstawowej formy czasownika regularnego końcówkę -ed, a w przypadku czasowników nieregularnych używamy drugiej formy czasownika.)

We use the Past Simple for (Czasu Past Simple używamy do):

• actions that happened at a definite time in the past (stated or implied)
  (czynności, które wydarzyły się w określonym momencie w przeszłości (podanym bezpośrednio lub możliwym do wywnioskowania))
• actions that happened one after the other in the past
  (przeszłe wydarzenia, które miały miejsce jedno po drugim)

 

Examples of the Past Continuous (Przykłady czasu Past Continuous):

"A light breeze was blowing"

"David and his friends were sailing"

"Rick and Tyler were helping..."

"...and Bill were talking..."

"David was trying to ..."

The Past Continuous is formed by using was/were + the base verb + -ing.

(Czas Past Continuous tworzymy, używając was/were oraz czasownika w formie podstawowej z końcówką -ing.)

We use the Past Continuous for (Czasu Past Continuous używamy do):

• an action in progress at a specific time in the past
  (opisania niezakończonej czynności w przeszłości)
• two or more actions in progress at the same time in the past
  (opisania dwóch lub więcej niezakończonych czynności w przeszłości, mających miejsce w tym samym czasie)
• a past action in progress when another action interrupted it
  (opisania przeszłej czynności, zakłóconej przez inną czynność)
• background information in a story
  (czynności, które stanowią tło wydarzeń)
