Przy zamianie z mowy niezależnej (direct speech) na mowę zależną (reported speech), czasownik w czasie teraźniejszym zamienia się w czasownik w czasie przeszłym, a czasownik w czasie przeszłym w 3. formę czasownika - imiesłów bierny.

Przesuwamy czas o jeden do tyłu za wyjątkiem czasu Past Perfect:

Present Continuous - Past Continuous

Present Perfect - Past Perfect

Past Simple - Past Perfect
