The average family in 1940 probably had an oven, a hoover and a radio. They didn't have any technologically advanced appliances and gadgets like a DVD player or a fridge. 

I think life then was more difficult but also simpler and more authentic. Now, you can buy everything in supermarkets, so it's hard to really apprieciate home-made cooking.
