Rules

1. We use a/an to talk about something for the first time.

Example - She goes to a shop near her school.

2. We use a/an with singular countable nouns.

Example - At lunchtime Becky Jackson buys a sandwich and some chocolate.

3. We use the when there is only one.

Example - But Becky’s other friends have lunch at the school cafeteria.

4. W use the to talk about something again.

Example - Her friend Annie goes to the shop too.
