Read the blog. Answer the questions (1–5)
Every week, I write about a different animal living in Africa. In this week’s blog, I’m talking about African elephants. I love all kinds of animals, but I think elephants are the most interesting and also the most beautiful.
Here are some interesting facts.
Elephants live a long time. Some of the oldest elephants are 70 years old. Elephants are the largest land animal in the world and they’re also one of the strongest. Did you know an elephant can push down a tree when it wants to eat leaves? Elephants are really big and heavy, but they don’t eat meat. They eat leaves, plants and fruit. Elephants are very intelligent and can be friendly because they live in large families. They can also be dangerous when they’re angry and they can be very noisy.
In Africa, there are two types of native elephants. The bush elephant lives in the grassy places. The forest elephant lives in the forests. Forest elephants are smaller and darker than bush elephants. As a matter of fact, elephants are endangered. A few years ago, they were nearly extinct. Today there is a population of only about 415,000 elephants in Africa. I think this is very sad and I want to help them.
Next year, I would like to go to Africa and work as a volunteer in a wildlife park. At the park, volunteers do important research on elephants. They sit in special places in the forest and watch the elephants for hours and take lots of photographs so they can learn to identify the different elephants. They understand their habits and how they live.
