Environergy
As the years pass, the Earth's population increases and so does our need for and use of all forms of power and energy.
It is only in relatively recent years that people have begun to realise that the Earth cannot continue sustaining us
unless we change our ways to look after it. (10.1) _____ So, for this reason too we need to look for renewable and
environmentally- friendly forms of energy - 'environergy'.
There are three main types of environergy: solar power (from the sun), hydroelectric power (or hydropower - from
the water) and wind power. Hydropower and wind power both work in essentially the same way - they have 'turbines'
- like the blades on a fan - which turn gears in a generator, creating electricity. In a 'wind farm' these turbines are
located on the tops of tall, 10-metre poles, where they are turned by the wind.(10.2) _____
There are two types of solar power. The first, ‘solar thermal' plants, use mirrors and lenses to focus the sun's heat,
boiling water so that the steam turns turbines much like the other types of aforementioned plants. The second,
'photovoltaic' or ‘PV plants, uses 'solar cells' in a 'solar panel' to turn the sun's light into electricity.
Solar, hydro- and wind power all have the advantage of not polluting the atmosphere, unlike coal, oil and nuclear
plants, as well as being renewable. Wind farms, however, are known to kill birds and a hydropower dam's turbines
can do the same to fish. Furthemore, hydropower can harm fish breeding patterns by blocking their passage up and
downstream, unless alternative routes are provided. It also affects the quality of the water, unless an extra machine is
added to remedy this.
Neither solar power nor wind power is noisy - a conversation can be held directly next to a solar panel or under a wind
turbine without having to raise one's voice. Hydropower, like any sort of waterfall, is noisier. (10.3) _____
Although wind farms cover a sguare kilometer, they only use 1% of that space and the rest is suitable for farming.
(10.4) _____ Solar installations take up little space. Wind farms in particular leave little change to the landscape once
removed.
(10.5) _____ All three, particularly solar power, are already used in isolated areas for such things as running
telephones, wires and water-pumps.
To overcome the problems presented by no sun, no wind or a drought, all three should be used together in the future
to replace coal, oil, gas and nuclear power plants - that's what I always do in SimCity!
Adapted from Benjamin Marshall, Environergy
A. A hydro electric plant is set up like a dam, usually on a large river, so the turbines are turned by the
flowing water.
B. As environmental awareness increases, these plants become cheaper and more widely used.
C. Our current methods of producing energy use finite resources, i.e. resources that will run out eventually.
D. The biggest impact of wind farms is a visual one - many find the 10 m poles ugly and distracting.
E. There is no doubt that continued use of fossil fuels will bring disaster upon mankind.
F. The dam created by a hydropower plant can be used for fishing, swimming and boating as well.
