Steve Irwin, Crocodile Hunter or Loving Parent?
Recently there has been some controversy surrounding Steve Irwin (well known for his Australian Zoo' in
Queensland, Australia and his TV documentary series 'The Crocodile Hunter', which has over hundreds of millions
of viewers scattered across the globe) and his family. (10.1) _____. These images have been met with a great deal
of hysterical squealing by an overreacting general public: "What if something had gone wrong? What if there had
been an accident? (10.2) _____ What if..." Whoa!
Many have scoffed at Steve's defence that "I thought people would understand that where I live is a very different
place to anyone else" but there are some very important truths behind that statement.(10.3) _____ Nine! And
he has survived another thirty-odd years, feeding and capturing crocodiles with his bare hands constantly along the
way. The simple fact that Steve Irwin's still alive, that he still has his full selection of arms, legs, fingers and toes
shows that he knows what he's doing. Oh boy, does he know what he's doing! So it was not simply good luck that
everything went okay, there was never a great danger, although, taken at face value, it certainly didn't appear that
way.
Nevertheless, it must be admitted that although the danger was minute, it was present. An accident could have
happened. So does this prove that Steve is a bad parent? (10.4) _____. Of course not! There is a danger, the
possibility of something going wrong every time we put our child to bed or in the car, leave them with a babysitter,
send them to school or to a party. (10.5) _____. Does this mean we are all bad parents? Once again, of course not!
A. That he has no right to raise his son?
B. A trades person who takes their child to work puts that child in danger.
C. Look at Steve's history: he grew up in his parents' Reptile and Wildlife Park, he got a scrub python for his sixth
birthday, he was learning to jump on top of and wrestle crocodiles into submission in North Queensland rivers
when he was nine.
D. What if this, little, innocent, defenceless Bob had ended up as supper for the big reptile?
E. The whole affair stemmed from the images splashed all over Australian television and newspapers of Steve
feeding a 4-metre long crocodile with his right hand whilst holding his one-month-old son, Bob, in the other.
F. The public has developed diverse attitudes on the case - many people expressed their wholehearted support for
Steve's move, while others were appalled at his irresponsible behaviour.
