ANIMAL FRIENDSHIPS
Research shows it's not just humans who make friends. For example, chimpanzees spend a lot of time cleaning each other. They also share food. Studies have found that male friendships last for about seven years. Both sexes look to their 'friends' for sympathy when they feel stressed. 7.1 They also act like us when they argue. They often fight and then forgive each other by kissing. Some types of birds also form friendships. Researchers have found that flamingos stand nearer to some individuals than others 7.2 Flamingos use their long necks and beaks to fight, so if two birds stand less than the length of a neck apart, it means that they trust each other. If there is a larger distance between them, they are trying to avoid each other. Elephants also build close relationships with other members of their group. 7.3 Friends always eat together and wash together, and they show their love for each other by hanging their ears and trunks over each other's backs. Researchers have noticed how elephants often get upset when separated from certain individuals. It is not just wild animals that act in this way. Studies also show that cows generally stand next to the same individual in a field. They also lick the heads, necks and backs of other cows with their tongue. 7.4 When one cow licks another, the heart rate of the second goes down and the animal relaxes. But if a farmer separates two 'friends', the animals show signs of being stressed and produce less milk.
