THE ROBOTS ARE COMING
From assembling cars in modern car factories to sorting orders in Amazon warehouses, robots now work round the clock, silently and efficiently, with no more than an occasional human on hand to ensure that everything runs smoothly. 6.1. ____ According to a recent government report, that may be about to change. Developments in artificial intelligence mean that we are now at the beginning of a new age of thinking machines. Today’s unemployed manual workers will be joined by tomorrow’s teachers, lawyers and doctors. In the West, there has often been hostility towards new technology, which has been seen as powerful, unfeeling and disruptive. 6.2. ____ In Japan, for example, there is a traditional religious belief that everything has some kind of soul or spirit. That includes not just living things such as people, animals and plants but other objects as well, such as mountains, rocks and rivers. In view of this, robots and other intelligent machines seem less threatening. The Swedish company Furhat Robotics seems to take this more positive view and has created a robot, Tengai, that can interview candidates for a job. Tengai has a human-like face, and her voice and facial features are those of woman. When she interviews, she asks all the candidates the same questions, in the same order. 6.3. ____ Tengai does not discriminate against anyone, and whether a candidate is a man or a woman, old or young, black or white, they are given the same chance. Details of the conversation are then given to a human interviewer who makes the final choice. On the other hand, it is not difficult to see the dangers. At the moment, the big technology companies hold huge amounts of data on almost all of us, and it is all controlled by humans. 6.4. ____ Through the internet and these huge databases, these machines will know everything about our school life, home life, work life, our finances and our relationships. They will control our governments, hospitals and our armed forces. The late Professor Steven Hawking was very concerned and warned that developing artificial intelligence ‘could be the worst thing in the history of civilisation.’ It’s a worrying thought, but at least we have been warned.
A. This, however, is by no means a view that is shared by everyone.
B. There are a number of advantages to their doing things in this way.
C. This means that, in some ways, the work can be done better than by a human.
D. Until now, it has been largely manual jobs such as these that have been taken over.
E. In the near future, though, there will be supercomputers that are more intelligent than us.
