When you think of pollution in cities, what is most likely to spring to mind? Probably
cars and buses spewing out exhaust fumes, factory chimneys spitting out poisonous
clouds of smoke, or streets covered by smog. (1) However, you may come in for a
surprise when you learn that they are just part of a bigger picture.
According to a recent study, air pollution is also caused by everyday consumer products
such as cleaning agents, perfume, or printer ink. Scientists have proven that air
contamination also stems from chemical reactions which occur in the atmosphere. (2)
These elements from products such as fragrances, air fresheners, scented candles, or
pots of paint get into the air quickly because they evaporate fast, adding to the overall
air pollution. What's a growing concern is that chemical reactions involving VOCs
happen both outdoors and indoors. (3)
What can be done about it, you may wonder? Can we cease to use all of these products?
Can they be manufactured in a different way to ensure that they don't interact like that
once in the atmosphere? (4) 2 If you wish to inhale better quality air, opt for fragrance-free
cleaning agents, keep use of any scented products to a minimum, and grow plants like
weeping figs or spider plants which apparently help get rid of the VOCS from the air inside
our homes. But what about a scent-free perfume? It's a contradiction in terms!
