An effective Education
My mum is Finnish and, when I was ten years old, she and my dad get divorced. It was a difficult time and, when it was all over, my mum decided to return to her homeland with my brother and me.
I was bilingual and had visited the country regularly but it was still an anxious time. I resented having to leave my classmates and worried that my studies would suffer. ...................... I imagined strict rules, tests and punishments, a bit like a public school in England. When I actually started school, I was in for a shock.
My school life in Finland was very relaxed. The first thing I noticed was the absence of ringing bells. If I hadn't noticed the playground emptying. I wouldn't have got to my first lesson on time............................The next shock was the lessons which were interesting and challenging but relaxed at the same time. There was no homework on the first day and very little for the whole year and the holidays were amazing. I was in paradise.
Much to my surprise, I wasn't the weakest student in the class. My maths and science knowledge was as good as anyone's. I did receive extra help with reading in Finnish history .....................
Another thing that surprised me was that there were no contests for students from different schools. In England, schools were desperate to climb league tables, like football team ....................................In Finland, the schools all knew they were good and had the respect of the community so they didn't need to prove anything.
A. Somehow, my Finnish schoolmates knew where they had to be and when without anyone telling them. Lateness was never a problem.
B. That was the first time I really noticed how different life in Finland was. I came out of the exam with a smile on my face instead of a frown.
C. Actually, having read that Finnish education was the best in Europe, I think I was most worried that I wouldn't be able to keep up with the other students.
D. They did this by achieving good exam grades and by winning maths, science, spelling and general knowledge comprehensions.
E. My knowledge of the kings and queen of England, which I had always been so proud of, was, unfortunately, irrelevant here.
Only for really determined
