You must have heard about the lynx-a mammal which belongs to the medium-sized family of wild cats. It has got characteristic "tufts" on the tops of its ears. In the past there were a lot of lynxes in the Piska and Nidzicka forests in Poland, but it was still legal to hunt and kill them until 1995, by which time they were almost extinct in Poland. It is now estimated that there are only about 200 individuals left, and that is why they are strictly protected. Not long ago, in the Beskidy Mountains, in the Czech Republic, a dead adult female Lynx was found. At the same time, across the border in Poland, a small 5-month old lynx kitten was discovered. It was living in an abandoned hotel together with some homeless domestic cats. The lynx, which is now called Mary, was taken to the Wild Animal Rehabilitation Centre in Bielsko-Biala. It has since grown into a young adult, and now professionals are trying to return it to the wild. Let's hope that they will be successful and the population of these rare animals will increase.
