FINDING GOLD IN THE SNOW
Kelly Gallagher, from Northern Ireland, is an Olympic ski champion. In 2014, she raced down the 'Super-G' course in Sochi, Russia, at about 100km per hour, she won a gold medal. That would be a fantastic achievement for anybody. However, this success is extra special for Kelly, because she's almost blind. Kelly was born with extremely poor eyesight, but it has never stopped her doing things. As a child, she always took part in normal school activities, and went cycling with friends. Then, when she was 17, she went on a family holiday to Andora and had her first skiing lesson. Since then, skiing has been her passion. In the 'Super-G' event at the Paralympic Games, Kelly had a guide, who raced down the slope just in front of her. Charlotte Evans, who is herself a talented sportswoman, wore an orange 'bib' which Kelly could just about see. As they flew down the slope, she shouted instructions to Kelly. To hear them she was wearing a Bluetooth earpiece. Kelly had to trust Charlotte completely - and she did. The two women had trained together for about four years by then, and were close friends. Together they had to fight all kinds of problems - including lack of money and injuries - but it was all worth it when they stood together on the podium!
