Until recently, many teens in the USA spent their summers working in camps and resorts, being lifeguards at local pools, working in restaurants or stores, or even picking fruit on farms. Teens took on these jobs because they were easily available and didn't need much training. Sadly, for teenagers who want work experience or some extra cash, these jobs have been disappearing - or they have been taken by adults who haven't been able to find more profitable full-time work in a difficult economic situation. Another reason why fewer teens do summer jobs for pay is the tough competition for places in good universities. Many teenagers who want to get into the bests schools spend theirs summers doing volunteer work or unpaid jobs related to their studies, since this experience will look good on their university applications. Others choose to enroll on college-level courses, or attend intensive summer programmes in music, science and other subjects, hoping this will give them an advantage when they apply to the universities of their choice.
