STILT HOUSES
Stilt houses are houses built on vertical poles. They are most commonly built over water, although they may also be built over dirt or sand. Humans have been building stilt houses for thousands of years, and today people all over the planet still choose to built them. From South Asia and Papua New Guinea to West Africa and South America, houses constructed in this style are extremely popular. Go to the beautiful city of Venice in northern Italy, and you will see almost an entire city built on stilts!
There are many advantages to stilt house. Building on stilts helps to protect houses from floods. Stilt houses are not difficult to construct and can be built on land that might otherwise be be unsuitable for housing (e.g. hillsides and lakes). The height of stilt houses serves to keep out vermin such as rats and mice, as well as other wild animals. Studies have been indicated that living in stilt houses lowers the risk of mosquito bites (and hence the dangerous disease malaria) because mosquitoes are less likely to enter houses high above the ground surface!
In Thailand, Vietnam and Indonesia stilt houses are common. The area beneath the house is often used for storage or lounging in the daytime, and sometimes for livestock.
Many Brazilians living alone the mighty Amazon river live in stilt houses, as they know it is the only way to prevent their homes from being destroyed by water when the Amazon floods. In the mountains Hunan Province in China, the Han, Tujia, Miao, Hui, Yao, Dong and Zhuang peoples have managed to inhabit the steep mountains by building stilt houses.
Today, stilt houses are gaining popularity in certain parts of the USA, particularly along the Gulf Coast where the threat of hurricanes is severe. The reason is that during a hurricane, stilt houses do not get the full force of the wind as it has somewhere else to pass, namely under the house.
In the future, stilt houses will probably become even more common around the globe. Scientists think that global warming will lead to rising sea levels and increased flooding in many cities. In order to deal with this, houses will have to be built on stilts. Imagine … one day you might only need to jump out of your window to get your morning shower!
