MODERN HOUSING
Few people are tired of speculating about the future, especially about how we will live or work. And now, a new book presents a few of the North America houses that represent the future of residential architecture. “House: American Houses for the New Century” by Cathy Lang Ho and Raul A. Barrenechem, looks at buildings that either use innovative materials, make optimal use of the environment or show residents’ lifestyles. The author concentrated on homes, not places of work, as they found them more interesting and in need of redesign. The book has several house plans as well as more than 200 colour photographs of very modern twenty first century homes.
“We wanted our book to be about innovation”, says Barreneche. Surprisingly, the authors had trouble finding homes that they wanted to present. “A lot of houses are still built in the same way in which they were built years ago despite the fact that our lives have changed”, he adds.
One house in the book, the Y-House by Steven Holl Architects, near New York, is perfect for today’s families with two separate wings that are ideal for multigenerational living.
Other houses show the different interests and activities of their occupants. One of the has an indoor swimming pool, an art gallery, a gym and a dance studio, all of which are the favourite hobbies of the house owners.
Modern architects can really design dream homes in every sense of the word and there isn’t much that cannot be done.
