A. They had a few things in common. Their poetry won them Nobel Prizes in Literature, they both loved Cracow and had long fascinating lives. He emigrated to the USA, where he worked as professor of Slavic literature for twenty years. She lived and worked all her life in Cracow. They first met in person in 1989, but had admired each other's poetry for years. After he returned to Cracow in retirement, he was a regular guest at her famous dinner parties. When she won the Nobel Prize, he congratulated her and joked that he felt sorry for her because he knew from experience all the disadvantages of sudden fame. Indeed, she didn't like all the attention she got after 'the Stockholm tragedy' as her friends called the prize. B. They both received a Nobel Prize in Literature for their great talent as epic writers. The older one became a real national celebrity. His books helped the Poles keep up their spirit in partitioned Poland. He was so loved by Polish people that they bought him a house in Oblęgorek near Kielce. They younger one had several occupations - he worked as an actor and a railway worker, among other, before he started to make a living from writing. His most important piece of work The Peasants - an epic novel about social issues and promoted the independence of Poland, but only the author of The Peasants lived to see Poland become free again. C. Marie Skłodowska-Curie discovered three radioactive elements: polonium, radium and uranium. She was the first woman the become a professor at the University of Paris. She helped build up X-ray ambulances for field hospitals in World War II. She died of a type anemia, which had developed from radiation exposure.
D. Lech Wałęsa co-founded the Solidarity trade union. He was one of the organisers of the 1980 strike in Gdynia Shipyard. He couldn't accept the Nobel Prize himself because he was under arrest. He won the first presidential election in Poland after the fall of communism.
