THE GLOBE THEATRE
One of the most popular London attractions is The Globe theatre. It is a faithful copy of a theatre which Shakespeare partly owned, and where many of his plays were performed. The original Globe was built in 1559. It was rebuilt after a fire, in 1613, and then pulled down in 1644. More than 350 years later, in 1997, the new theatre was completed, on almost the same site (it's on the south bank of the River Thames). In Shakespeare's time , wealthier people sat on wooden seats around the stage and were covered by a roof. The cheapest theatre tickets went to the groundlings, who stood in front of the stage, in the open air. They were allowed to come and go as they wished as well as eat, drink and chat. They often called out to the actors and generally joined in with the play. All of this is still true today!
