HOW CLEAN WATER CHANGES LIVES
4.1. ____
Those of us in the richer parts of the world think that we will always have access to plenty of
clean water. There may be dry times when we are asked to use less water and avoid watering
our gardens, but it’s still true that all we have to do is turn on a tap in the house to get all the
water we need.
4.2. ___
What we often forget is that there isn’t enough water in some parts of the world. People living
in these areas spend enormous amounts of time and effort collecting and transporting water
to their homes. This uses the time and energy which they could put into growing food, raising
farm animals or developing other types of businesses.
4.3. ___
Having clean water not only saves time, it also makes people healthier. Much of the water that
was collected from impure sources created a number of different diseases. With clean water,
both children and adults are less likely to suffer from skin and eye problems and other, more
dangerous diseases.
4.4. ___
New technologies are being developed to help in this effort. Water-cleaning systems that
don’t cost a lot, water pumps that use power from the sun and other new ideas are making
clean water available in places where it was difficult to imagine before. This gives us hope that
spending hours collecting and carrying dirty water will soon be a thing of the past.
