THE PANAMA CANAL
4.1.
The idea of building a canal across Panama is not a new one. King Charles I of Spain wanted to build
one in 1534, but it seemed to be impossible. Centuries later, in 1881, a French team had the same
ambition and started work, led by Ferdinand de Lesseps, who had built the Suez Canal.
4.2.
Living and working in Panama was far from easy. Jules Dingler, one of the directors of the project,
arrived in Panama in 1883. Just a few months later, his daughter died of yellow fever, then his son; his
wife died shortly afterwards. The same was happening to the workers. More than 20,000 men died, and
the French finally gave up in 1889 and went home.
4.3.
The US followed in 1904. They were not going to make the same mistakes as the French. First of all,
they changed the design of the canal. Also, and this was very important, it was now known that many
diseases were carried by mosquitoes. By controlling mosquitoes, far fewer men caught yellow fever or
malaria, although the number of deaths was still high.
4.4.
The canal was completed in 1914, and ships could finally sail between the Atlantic and the Pacific
without having to go all the way round South America. Since that time, more than a million ships have
traveled through its waters, and the canal is seen by many as one of the greatest achievements of recent
times.
