E. However, not that many of us are interested in learning how to make a perfect souffle or the perfect truffle sauce, or even in seeing how it's done
F. But perhaps the most popular are the ones where cooks compete against each other for very big prizes.
There are so many cookery shows on television these days that it's hard to keep up with all of them. There are programmes that teach the basics of cooking or analyse the fine points of complicated dishes. In other programmes, we visit cooks in their own homes or look into the cupboards and fridges of restaurant kitchens to learn about some very nasty secrets. All of these shows have enthausiastic viewers. 1____________. Both amateur and professional cooks compete for rewards such as a chance to work in one of the world's great restaurants, publish their own cookbook, or even open their own restaurant. The prizes are big, and it's easy to understand why a person who loves cooking would want to participate. 2.___________ . It seems like the perfect chance for an ambitious cook to make it in a competitive world. But why does the average person watch these shows ? Everyone eats, of course, and food in some from or other is an important part of everyone's life. 3__________. The truth is that the reward for most people in watching a cookery competition is similar to the pleasure we get from watching sports, game shows or any other competitive activity. We identify with and support one or more of the competitors, just like in sports. 4___________. In the same way, we feel sadness when they are defeated, and new hope when they get another chance to prove how good they are.
This is why the makers of 'reality' competitions of all kinds spend so much time letting us see the background stories of the competitors themselves. They want us to sympathise and feel that we know these people. And if the competitor has a huge challenge - an ill husband, no place to live or even a physical disability - so much the better. 5_________. We wanted her to win in spite of the difficulties. And she did. For us viewers, it was almost as satisyfing as winning the prize ourselves, only without having to do anything more difficult than sit on the sofa and hold the remote... and perhaps imagine our own possible achievements, even if we don't actually plan to do more than go to the fridge for a snack during the commercial break.
