NATURE IN THE BIG CITY
When we think of huge cities like New York or London, nature is not the first thing that comes
to mind. Instead, we imagine streets filled with cars and buses, and a few trees trying to
survive in this unfriendly environment. 7.1. _____ But while both these two great parks are
welcoming green spaces, they seem too perfect to have much to do with nature.
However, if you make the effort to look for it, you discover that nature in a city area is nothing
unusual. For example, I used to think that real nature could be found only outside cities.
7.2. _____ This small green space along the banks of the River Thames had been set up by
volunteers, and it featured labelled plants, information maps, and pictures of the riverside
birds. Schoolchildren were brought there to discover the bits of nature that still survived in
their city, and it was an amazing experience.
While that little piece of nature has since been built over, some larger, more organised projects
are being developed in cities. One of the most recent and impressive of these is the
Walthamstow Wetlands in North London. 7.3. _____ And because of its size, as you walk
along its trails you can forget that the city centre is only a short trip away.
